I have the honour to apply for the post, which

I understand is now, or shortly will be, vacant, of Commission- -er at Limassol, Cyprus.

2. My reasons for asking for this appointment,

of which the emoluments are so much less than those of the .post

which I now hold are as follow. The climate of Hongkong, which has never suited my wife, now .no longer agrees with me,

and my doctor warns me against returning thither. indeed, told that I was not expected to live when I embarked for home on the 1st February last. The climate is not really

a bad one, so long as one preserves one's health, but I have seen too many officials and others absolutely break down, or die suddenly, because it no longer suited them, and they were unable to obtain a transfer to another climate, to be willing to disregard the doctor's warning if I can possibly obtain .employment elsewhere.

3. It is with great regret that I have arrived

at this decision, for I am deeply interested in the Colony of Hongkong, and its welfare, and have bought a house there, which

I shall probably have to sell at a considerable loss. health must come first.

But

4. And there are other reasons. My children .have now arrived at an age when it is impossible for them to remain any longer in the tropics, besides which it is now neces- -sary that they be educated, which is not possible in Hongkong,
